Whimsical and amusing, The Singing Alphabet app is both educational and tremendously entertaining.
The Singing Alphabet is amazing. It’s a simple idea – tap a letter and hear it sing – and it’s got just a single function, but it’s so winningly designed and cleverly presented that it immediately shot to the top of our must-have apps list.
Ideal for young children just learning the alphabet, the app is a creation of The Ministry of Letters, itself a branch of advertising agency Mother London. The Ministry of Letters’ first project was a book titled Operation Alphabet, to which the app is closely related.
The app opens with beautiful sketches of London that zoom into a postbox behind which is a stage hidden by red curtains. These pull back to reveal a full alphabet of lower-case letters, each with a set of eyes and a pair of tiny feet, which help them bob up and down. Accessories, from admiral’s hats to sashes to mustaches, are also prevalent. Tap any letter to start the music, a simple but superbly catchy tune with which the letters will harmonize. Each letter sings the sound it makes out loud – tap just one or tap as many as you like. No matter how many letters are singing, the effect is harmonious and delightful.
Tap the pencil icon in the bottom left-hand corner to see the letters written out along the bottom of the screen. You can spell out words and the letters will sing in the correct order. You can “hear” some words sung this way, but only short ones, obviously.
We had so much fun playing with this app. The sounds the letters make and the way they’re anthropomorphized are winsome and smile-inducing. The Ministry of Letters has created a truly delightful educational experience, and we’re already looking forward to their next app.
