This app turns a favorite TV show into an educational app to develop preschoolers’ basic math skills.
Team Umizoomi is an animated show for preschoolers on Nickelodeon, but you don’t need to know the show to use the app. Team Umizoomi Math is designed to help preschool-age children practice basic math concepts like identifying numbers, counting, simple addition and subtraction, and matching number symbols to quantities.
Team Umizoomi comprises a boy and a girl (Geo and Milli) and their robot friend Bot. The three of them lead you through the games and cheer you on when you get answers right. The app opens in Umi City, and you enter all the games from here. Each time you play a game, you are awarded a badge. You have to play a round and win a badge in the first game, Toy Store Counting, before you can enter the next game, and so on. There are five games in all and eight rounds in each game. Once you’ve completed all eight rounds of a game, you get a trophy, and when you’ve collected all five trophies you are awarded the key to Umi City.
As this app is designed for preschool-level kids, the badges and trophies might not make much of an impact, especially as they don’t look especially impressive. But Mili, Geo and Bot do a lot of zooming in and out of the screen, issue plenty of praise and encouragement (“You’ve got mighty math powers!”) and even do a dance when you complete a game.
Here’s what each game does:
Toy Store Counting
This starter game is simple : Each of the characters is standing next to a shelf of toys. Simply tap the toys on each shelf to count them.
|Good Point||There’s lots of positive reinforcement, and the increasing difficulty of the rounds make it an app that you’ll use for a while.|
|Bad Point||Tapping the screen in the middle of a speech or action will cancel it and send you back to the beginning – it’s too easy to do this inadvertently.|
|Comment & Tip||For preschoolers, this app should hone skills while keeping their attention.|
