We’re big fans of Animal Alphabet, a beautiful app for kids by FishTheMouse Media, so we were very excited to get our hands on Old MacDonald HD. This interactive app puts a 21st-century spin on the traditional song, taking users to Old MacDonald’s digital farm.
The opening scene features Old MacDonald himself. You speed him along towards his farm on his tractor, a delightfully responsive movement – you can almost feel the machine humming! Once there, you’ll see a simple barnyard populated by various animals, all of whom perform actions and make noise when you tap them. It’s a simple app, but the illustrations are beautiful and the sounds the animals make are noisy and amusing. The drawings were painted on canvas, originally, and are not computer-generated – this gives the app a lovely, old-fashioned feel.
The background music is Jill Sobule singing “Old MacDonald” in English and Dominique Durand singing it in French. Switching the vocals from English to French and back again is easy – just tap the small circular flag in the bottom left-hand corner. This could be a fun way to teach children a simple song in another language.
While there’s a definite shortage of blinking lights and explosions here (possibly a negative factor for some kids), Old MacDonald HD meets the expectations we have for FishThe Mouse: a quality app that’s engaging, beautiful to look at and with just the right amount of interactivity.

|Good Point||Gorgeous illustrations are a FishTheMouse trademark|
|Bad Point||There’s not a whole lot to do after you’ve seen and heard all the animals.|
|Comment & Tip||There’s a “secret” screen that’s only unveiled once you’ve tapped all the animals, which is a great way to keep kids interested in finding more.|
