Poul Lange’s successful book is now also available on iPad! For those of you who are not familiar with the book, it caught attention in 2006 because of its unique approach towards children. Instead of writing about fairytales or superhero’s,
Poul Lange wrote a children’s book about ‘real’ topics. The Book of Holes talks about the Big Bang, where babies come from, the senses and the human body. Boring you say? We disagree. It’s one of the most funny and entertaining apps we reviewed in the last few weeks.
How it works
First, the user can choose whether they want to read for themselves or being read to. If your child feels confident enough to read but finds out later that it’s too difficult, they can change the reading-mode with a simple tap of their fingers. After each page of text, there is an interactive illustration-page that comes alive! Suddenly planets start to bounce around or aliens appear on your screen! A few pages later you can see how the eye works and how food travels through your body. Don’t forget to turn on the sound when you’re listening or reading, the sounds that accompany the illustrations will make every child smile.
Why we like it
This interactive book is perfect to talk to your kids about topics that can be difficult to explain or that may come across as boring. The app shows what happens to the food that enters your body and visualizes the importance and functions of mouth, eyes and in a very fun and interactive way. Even grown-ups will appreciate the animation and choice of illustrations in ‘Book of Holes’. This app is a perfect combination of education and entertainment.
